There are salt marshes and wetlands around the lake's shores. In fact, whereas a lake that actually petrified anything that came near it or touched the water would likely be a complete dead-zone for birds and animals, life thrives around Lake Natron.

The 'stony' look about them just comes from the the salts and sodas in the natron caking onto their skin and feathers. However, these animals are simply dying near the lake, their bodies get covered with a layer of natron, which dries them out and preserves them. This is what creates things like petrified wood and dinosaur fossils. When a body becomes truly petrified, its cells are slowly replaced over time by rock. That’s why if you open your eyes underwater in The Dead Sea, your eyes will sting badly.That's really what's going on here. How is this possible? Well, The Dead Sea has a high volume of salt and other minerals in the water, in fact, it is 10 times as salty as the ocean, with a salinity of about 34%.

This is not a very common destination for tourists, as few people visit this region in general… But let us paint the picture for you: In an otherwise normal forest in Poland, full of straight trees, there is this collection of curved trees. Why? Because there is literally no scientific explanation as to why these trees are crooked. This could easily be the strangest destinations on this list. The most important characteristic to know about her legend is that anyone who gazed upon her face would turn to stone. At a first glance, we couldn’t believe some of these places were real!
